Vol. 105 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Coast Erosion.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the serious consequences of coast erosion at Rosslare Strand, County Wexford, which is resulting in large tracts of valuable land along the seafront being destroyed; and whether, in view of the magnitude of the problem, he is prepared to take powers by emergency legislation or otherwise which will enable him to meet this situation expeditiously.

As I informed the Deputy in a recent letter, there is at present no statutory authority enabling the State to embark upon coastal protection works. It is not proposed to introduce legislation to deal specially with Rosslare Strand. Proposals for general legislation to enable works of the kind to be undertaken in suitable cases are, however, under consideration.
