Vol. 106 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allocation of Coke to Wexford.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the amounts of coke that will be allocated to Messrs. Davis' Foundry, Enniscorthy, and also, to the foundries in Wexford; and further, if he will state when cargoes of coke will arrive.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, in respect of the cargo of foundry coke expected from America, the allocation to each of the foundries in Wexford town and county; and also, on what basis these allocations were made.

I propose, with your permission, to take questions Nos. 4 and 5 together. Information as to the allocations of fuels to individual concerns must, for obvious reasons, be treated as confidential, and I am not therefore prepared to give details of the coke allocations made to each of the Wexford foundries. The cargo of United States coke referred to has been allocated to foundries engaged in the manufacture or repair of agricultural machinery on the basis of their normal coke consumption.

Cargoes of coal are arriving daily at different ports.

The Minister says that cargoes are arriving daily at different ports. In the interest of the agricultural community, concerns manufacturing machinery for agriculture should get priority.

The reference to cargoes arriving daily was in respect of coal, not coke.

Has the Minister any idea as to when coke will come?

A quantity of coke has come and has been allocated.

The foundries are still closed.

Every foundry engaged in the repair or manufacture of agricultural machinery has received some allocation. It is a small allocation but it is all that can be given at the moment.

Through the Fianna Fáil clubs, the owners were informed that coal was already at hand, that they would have it to-morrow. It is over three weeks since that appeared in the public Press. There was notification, through the Fianna Fáil clubs by Deputy Allen to the owners of these industries.
