Vol. 106 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Railway Stations.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the proposed closing of the railway stations at Inch and Camolin, County Wexford, is a matter of grave concern to the local inhabitants, as serious loss and inconvenience will result; and if, in view of the fact that Inch Station serves a wide area for dairying and the supply of milk to Dublin, and that Camolin is an important centre for beet-growing and livestock production, he will direct Córas Iompair Éireann to re-examine the position with a view to keeping both stations in use.

This is a matter which should be taken up with the company. I understand, however, that following discussion with local interests, Córas Iompair Éireann have deferred closing these stations.

Is the Minister aware that Inch Station is in the centre of a dairying district and that the majority of the farmers in that area are dependent for a weekly income on their sales of milk? I would ask the Minister to use his influence to see that these stations are not closed. Camolin Station serves an important agricultural district. A lot of timber leaves that station and if the station is closed, it will result in great hardship to the people of the area. It is not a sign of prosperity to see stations closing.

Córas Iompair Éireann does not require to obtain my sanction before closing a station. That is why I informed the Deputy that this is a matter that should be discussed with the company. As I have informed the Deputy, the company, however, has deferred the closing of these stations.

I thought you were captain of the old ship.
