Vol. 108 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - United Nations Organisation.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if it is now proposed to withdraw the application of Ireland for admission to the United Nations Organisation; and if not, whether, in view of the rejection of the application, he will explain why it is not proposed to withdraw it.

It is scarcely correct to speak of this country's application as having been rejected. The application has not come before the General Assembly as the Security Council has been unable to make the necessary recommendation, owing to the opposition of a single State. The Deputy is aware that many States have expressed the view at the General Assembly, which is at present in session, that the technical provisions which prevent the assembly's pronouncing on our application should be modified.
