Vol. 108 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Book Embargo.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, having regard to the fact that Irish book publishing has been at a standstill since 1st January, 1947, arising from the operation of British import orders and also having regard to the considerable loss to Irish authors of royalties on sales in Great Britain, he is now in a position to give a report on the negotiations which have been in progress for the lifting of the embargo; and also, whether his Department have formulated, or is formulating, any interim measures to rectify the present position whereby the majority of the books stocked in Irish bookshops are of British manufacture.

The negotiations with the British authorities are still proceeding, and I am not in a position to make any report in the matter at this stage. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.
