Vol. 109 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sub-letting of Dwellinghouse.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the reasons why the Land Commission have refused to give Mrs. Mary Anne Byrne, Duffery, Hacketstown, County Carlow, permission to sub-let a vacant dwellinghouse on her holding to her married son who has no home.

Mrs. Byrne who resides on a holding in the townland of Constable Hill, County Carlow, received from the Land Commission an allotment in the townland of Duffery, which is to be consolidated with her holding to make an economic unit. It is on this additional parcel that the house referred to by the Deputy is situate. It was a condition of the allotment that this house should not be used as a second dwellinghouse and, accordingly, the building was converted into an outoffice.

The Land Commission have carefully considered the application of Mrs. Byrne but they are not prepared to agree to this building being used as a dwellinghouse.

Having regard to the shortage of housing accommodation, does the Minister not consider it very unfair and wrong that his Department should deprive a woman of the right to set a vacant dwellinghouse on her holding to her son who is a married man with a family and who has no home whatever?

I do not think anything of the kind.

Does the Minister deny that this man is married and has a family and has no home?

I do not deny that he is married. I do not know whether he is married or not.

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I desire to give notice that I shall raise the matter on the adjournment.
