Vol. 109 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Timber for Cart Making.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the scarcity of timber suitable for making horse or donkey carts, he will grant permits to farmers in County Sligo to enable them to purchase foreign or imported timber for the making of such carts.

For some months past permits for the purchase of imported softwood and hardwood timber have been freely issued for the manufacture of horse and donkey carts.

Arising out of that, would the Minister consider a more liberal policy in regard to permitting local sawyers to use native timber which they come into possession of or which they are in a position to purchase in the woods, for the purpose of making carts as a number of local sawyers are very strictly limited in the use they may make of timber they acquire?

I think the control of the sawing of timber for commercial purposes is a different question.
