Vol. 109 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Completion of Nutritional Survey.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the approximate date on which it is expected that the nutritional survey, initiated by the former Department of Local Government and Public Health, will be completed; the number of persons now engaged on the work of the survey; and the total expenditure incurred up to date.

It is anticipated that the field-work of the nutritional investigators and the clinical examinations, which are being undertaken by a medical officer, will both be completed by the end of next year. In the City of Dublin the survey is now advanced and it may be possible to publish the results much sooner. The statistical analysis of the returns received so far is proceeding but I cannot say with any certainty when this work will be completed in respect of the survey as a whole.

Ten nutritional investigators are at present carrying out the dietary survey. A temporary medical inspector and a nurse are engaged on the clinical survey of school-children and certain other groups of the population which is being conducted as an integral part of the nutrition survey. The work of this staff is being carried out under the general direction and supervision of a senior medical inspector of my Department.

The total expenditure on the survey up to 30th November, 1947, was £7,966 14s. 4d.
