asked the Taoiseach if he is aware of the general demand that April 24th in each year be declared a national public holiday and if he will consider the matter with a view to the establishment of this day as a national public holiday in future years.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given in this House to a similar question addressed to my predecessor on the 18th October, 1944, to the effect that this matter had been considered on more than one occasion by the then Government and that it had been decided to adhere to the arrangement which has been followed in the past of commemorating the Rising of 1916 at Easter each year.
It is not proposed to depart from the decision of the last Government on this matter.
