Vol. 110 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Abattoir for Galway.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state whether proposals have been received in his Department from the Galway Corporation for the building of a new abattoir, and, if so, whether he will state the present position regarding the matter.

Several proposals in regard to the selection of a site for the erection of a public abattoir in Galway have been submitted. The corporation proposed originally to acquire a site at Lough Atalia Road, but this was abandoned owing to the difficulties likely to be experienced in its acquisition. A site at Wood Quay was then proposed, but as this is at present in use as a playground and as there is no other open space in the neighbourhood, its diversion to another use could not be approved.

On the 12th March last the Department recommended certain amendments in plans prepared by the town surveyor for a site at Blake's Lane, which he had reported to be the best available site in the area. At the same time information was requested as to any other suitable sites. The further proposals of the corporation in this matter are at present awaited in the Department.
