Vol. 110 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Flooding.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware: (a) that serious flooding frequently occurs along the River Flesk, County Kerry, between Loo Bridge Railway Station and Brewsterfield Bridge, a distance of about five miles, causing great damage to crops in the area and rendering large tracts of land marshy and unfit for cultivation; (b) that as a result of this flooding the Cork-Killarney main road is often impassable and a danger to pedestrian and vehicular traffic: and (c) that consequently there is an urgent necessity for carrying out a drainage scheme in the area; and, if so, whether he will sanction such a scheme as soon as possible.

Drainage improvement works in the area to which the Deputy refers would be considered by the Commissioners of Public Works only as part of a comprehensive scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, for the River Laune catchment area as a whole. It is not possible to say when such a scheme may be undertaken.
