Vol. 111 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rearrangement of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when the Land Commission propose to stripe and rearrange the lands and give housing grants in respect of the Hassett estate, near Glenamoy; and also arrange for the migration of some of the tenants in those areas where there is a big rundale problem of smallholders.

The "Hassett" estate referred to by the Deputy would appear to be the Hassard estate Record No. S.4998. The questions of the rearrangement of this estate and the migration of some of the tenants are noted for investigation, but the Land Commission are not yet in a position to state when these matters can be dealt with.

Meanwhile, as regards housing assistance, it is open to any tenant to apply to the Department of Local Government for a grant under the Housing Acts. If that Department makes a tenant a grant for the erection of a house containing four or more rooms, the Land Commission will consider making a loan in addition repayable by an annuity subject to certain conditions.

The making of a building grant by the Department of Local Government or a building advance by the Land Commission before rearrangement is completed is contingent on the possibility of finding a building site on the holding which will not conflict with subsequent rearrangement.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether it is the intention of the Land Commission to stripe and rearrange the McCormick estate and give housing grants to tenants thereon.

There are several McCormick estates in County Mayo but the Deputy's question would appear to refer to the estate of Irish Land Commission (James McCormick), Record No. S.6757, Lands of Moyrahan and Bartrauve. This is one of numerous congested estates in the area noted by the Land Commission for rearrangement and improvement as soon as circumstances permit.

Meanwhile as regards housing assistance, it is open to any tenant to apply to the Department of Local Government for a grant under the Housing Acts. If that Department makes a tenant a grant for the erection of a house containing four or more rooms, the Land Commission will consider making a loan in addition, repayable by an annuity subject to certain conditions.

The making of a building grant by the Department of Local Government or a building advance by the Land Commission before rearrangement is completed is contingent on the possibility of finding a building site on the holding which will not conflict with subsequently rearrangement.
