Vol. 111 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Engines for Fishing Craft.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in view of the fact that the Bolinder type of engine has proved unsatisfactory for the fishermen of Kerry, he will make representations to the British Government at the forthcoming trade talks for an increased allocation of Kelvin engines, which are very suitable for fishing craft.

I cannot agree with the generalisation that Bolinder engines have proved unsatisfactory for fishermen in County Kerry. There is an urgent need in this country at present for engines suitable for fishing boats and the Deputy can be assured that all possible steps towards obtaining better supplies will be taken. The Deputy's remarks about Kelvin engines will be noted, but over and above agreement at Government levels the readiness of the makers of this type of engine to cooperate in this matter must be reckoned with.
