Vol. 111 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pay Increase for State Employees.

Mr. A. Byrne

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state to what grades of Government employees the proposed increase of 11/ per week applies.

The increase of 11/- a week will apply to whole-time male officers of Departmental grades in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, whose total remuneration does not exceed £350 a year. An increase of 5/6 will be paid to whole-time women and juvenile employees in the Departmental grades in the same Department. The increases are temporary and non-pensionable and were granted in anticipation of the review of remuneration which, under the consolidation agreement, was due to take place two years after 1st November, 1946.

Final decisions have not yet been reached regarding the application of these increases to similar classes in the Civil Service generally. It has, however, been decided that the increase of 11/- a week will be extended to all married men in whole-time non-industrial employment whose total remuneration is not more than £350 a year.

Mr. A. Byrne

Will the Minister say whether this agreed 11/- per week will be paid to all forms of Government workers who are in receipt of moderate wages and who have to meet the same increase in cost of living as those who have already got the 11/-?

I have told the Deputy the decision so far. There are other things then pending.

Mr. A. Byrne

But all forms of Government workers who have not yet got the 11/- will be considered?

No, I did not commit myself to saying that. Final decisions have not been taken outside the people who have been mentioned.

Mr. A. Byrne

I am asking the Minister will he consider all those others who have not got the 11/-?

I am refusing to mislead the Deputy by being affirmative on this point. A decision will be reached sooner or later.
