Vol. 111 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Names of Public Thoroughfares.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he will consider the introduction of legislation empowering local authorities to alter the names of public thoroughfares so that they may serve to perpetuate the memory of those who gave service to this nation rather than those whose sole claim to fame is that they were the representatives of an alien ascendancy.

Under Section 78 of the Local Government Act, 1946, a local authority is already empowered, with the consent of not less than four-sevenths of the ratepayers in a street, to change the name of the street.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that as a result of representations made by the National Graves Association a proposal to change the name of Talbot Street to Sean Tracey Street was blocked by a very small number of the actual residents in the street?

I am not so aware.
