Vol. 112 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Acquisition and Division.

asked the Minister for Lands whether it is proposed to divide the lands of Messrs. Coffey, Coireglen, Birdhill, County Tipperary; and, if so, when they will be distributed among the uneconomic holders in the district.

A scheme for the division of the lands of Birdhill held by the representatives of John Coffey is in course of preparation. It is not possible at this stage to state when the lands will be divided.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when it is proposed to acquire and subdivide the Crofts estate at Velvetstown, Buttevant, County Cork.

The proceedings which are pending for the resumption of part of the holding of Mr. Crofts at Velvetstown, Buttevant, will be completed as soon as possible. I cannot say when the Land Commission will be in a position to divide the lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that Mr. William McGee, the owner of the farm of Lecarrow-Naveagh, Enniscrone, No. U. 13302, who had been granted two years' grace by the Land Commission in which to build a house on his property, sold the farm immediately after he was given this concession; and if in the circumstances he will take steps to recover this property for division among local congests.

I understand that the circumstances of this case are at present under consideration by the Commissioners.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when it is proposed to acquire and subdivide the McCarthy-O'Leary estate at Millstreet, County Cork.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) when the Land Commission will be in a position to divide the lands on the McCarthy-O'Leary estate, Millstreet, County Cork; and (b) whether a suitable portion of that estate will be allocated for use as a public park and recreation grounds for the people of Millstreet.

I propose, with your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, to take together Questions Nos. 18 and 19, which both relate to the McCarthy-O'Leary estate at Millstreet, County Cork. The Land Commission have no proceedings for the acquisition of this estate.

Will the Minister state if proceedings were ever instituted for the acquisition of this land?

No proceedings were instituted.

Is the Minister aware that representations were made to his predecessor in 1945 to have this land taken over?

I am aware of that.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the present position regarding the proposed scheme for the acquisition of land for afforestation purposes in the Glenbeigh and Glencar districts, County Kerry; and, if so, whether he will have the matter expedited.

The Deputy is referred to replies in this matter given in the House on the 24th June and 5th November, 1947. It has not been possible to come to terms with the head landlord of the property and consideration will be given to the institution of compulsory proceedings for acquisition when the Forestry Act of 1946 comes into operation in the next few months.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he proposes to acquire the lands of Gleanncuine in the Tohar district of County Clare, containing 1,000 acres, which have been offered for reafforestation to his Department by the owner.

An offer of 1,000 acres at Gleanncuine in the Tulla district cannot be traced. The nearest offer to Glenquin is at Turkenagh mountain. This mountain has been inspected and found to be mostly unplantable and subject to grazing and turbary rights. Consideration is, however, being given to the possibility of getting a compact block of fairly good plantable land on the southern slopes of the mountain.

The reply deals with a different estate altogether. There is obviously a misprint in the Order Paper. I will have the matter corrected and I will repeat the question.

Very good.
