Vol. 112 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Clare Telephone Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that there is no telephone exchange at Cratloe, County Clare; that this centre is situate on the Limerick-Shannon Airport-Ennis Road, within six-and-a-half miles of Ennis and beside underground and overground wires, and that much inconvenience is often caused to residents and visitors in that district because of the lack of telephone facilities; and, if so, whether he will arrange to have an exchange installed at this centre at an early date.

The provision of a telephone exchange at Cratloe would not be warranted at present as the Department has not received any applications for telephone service from that district.

A public telephone call office will, however, be installed at the post office there as part of the scheme to provide public telephone facilities at all post offices but, as work on this scheme has had to be suspended temporarily in favour of more urgent work—particularly the provision of telephones for waiting applicants—it is not possible to say yet when that will be done.
