asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate the nature of the Fair Wages Clause now inserted by all Departments in Government contracts.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fair Wages Clause.
The Fair Wages Clause normally inserted in Government contracts requires that rates of wages and hours of labour shall be not less favourable than those commonly recognised by employers and trade societies or current amongst good employers in the district or in the nearest district with similar industrial conditions. The Clause provides also that, in connection with its observance, the conditions of employment in the contracting firm and those current in the trade in the district shall be taken into account. The contractor is prohibited from any sub-letting which is not customary and expressly permitted, and is responsible for the observance of the Clause by a sub-contractor.
