Vol. 113 No. 1

Written Answers to Questions. - Condition of Secondary Roads in Turf Counties.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the secondary roads in turf counties like Kerry are in a serious condition of disrepair due to the abnormal traffic which they had to bear during the emergency years; that their rehabilitation will impose a serious financial burden on the local ratepayers in the counties concerned; and if he will consider the advisability of making the repair of these roads a national charge for the next five years.

As I mentioned in the Estimates Debates I fully appreciate the need to bring secondary roads throughout the country to a good standard. I hope to be able to place my detailed views and recommendations on this matter before the county councils in time for consideration by them in conjunction with their Roads Estimates for the coming financial year. I could, however, make no practicable proposals based on such a radical change in road finances as suggested by the Deputy.
