Vol. 113 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of Monaghan National School.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the condition of Clonrye National School constitutes a menace to the health of the children and teachers, and if he will indicate when it is proposed to commence the building of the new school which has been so long contemplated.

I am aware of the defective condition of the present Clonrye National School, Clones, County Monaghan. The Department is in correspondence with the manager with a view to its replacement by a new school, but certain arrangements have still to be made before a grant towards the cost of a new school can be sanctioned. Every effort will be made to have the case expedited so as to enable the erection of the new school to be undertaken as soon as possible.

Would the Minister indicate at whose door lies the blame for the scandalous delay in the closing of this hovel?

I do not think it would serve any purpose to add anything to the information I have given the Deputy in my reply. The Deputy can be assured that everything will be done to see that the matter is dealt with quickly.

I should like the Minister to know that there is a possibility that this school will have to be closed in the interests of public health very shortly.
