Vol. 113 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of (1) men and (2) women who have left this country to take up employment abroad during each of the months of the present year with comparative figures for the corresponding months of last year.

I propose, with the permission of the Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the latest available figures.

Following is the statement:—

IRELAND.

The following table shows, for each of the months January-August, 1948, the numbers of new travel identity cards and passports granted to (1) men, (2) women, to go abroad to take up employment or permanent residence; and, for the same months of 1947, the numbers of new travel permits and passports granted to (1) men, (2) women to go abroad to take up employment.

(1) Travel permits were superseded by travel identity card as from 5th January, 1948.

(2) It is believed that, for the specified months of 1948, the numbers of travel identity cards and passports granted to persons to take up permanent residence abroad form a small proportion of the total.

(3) There is no official information as to how many of the persons to whom such permits, cards or passports were granted actually went abroad.

(4) In addition to persons who actually went abroad on the travel permits, travel identity cards and passports shown in the table above, an unknown number of persons who already held a permit, identity card or passport may have gone abroad once or more times during the months specified. The period of validity of travel permits, travel identity cards and passports is five years.

(5) The numbers shown in the table must not be taken as representing net emigration (or the excess of the number of emigrants over the number of immigrants). The numbers of immigrants, while not exactly ascertainable, are known to be considerable during the periods indicated.
