Vol. 113 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Flooding.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that a number of holdings in County Kerry are flooded as a result of the flooding of rivers and of coast erosion and that either the whole or part of these holdings are incapable of being used for farming purposes; and whether in order to relieve these small farmers proposals for legislation will be introduced to exempt occupiers of these flooded areas from payment of rates.

I am aware that the Kerry County Council have had difficulty in collecting rates on lands which were alleged to be unprofitable by reason of flooding. The remedy at present available to rated occupiers of such lands is an appeal to the Commissioner of Valuation to remove from the valuation list the valuations of the lands in question.
