Vol. 113 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Matters—English Newspaper Statement.

asked the Taoiseach whether his attention has been drawn to the statement which appeared in an English Sunday newspaper containing certain suggestions on the question of American military plans in relation to Ireland; and if, in view of the fact that efforts are likely to be made to exploit such statements both here and abroad by persons anxious to create propaganda against the Government, he will indicate clearly the actual position as to whether our country's representatives have, either directly or by implication, entered into any commitment on defence matters with any outside nation.

I presume the Deputy is referring to a statement which appeared in The Sunday Times of the 28th November.

No representative of this State has, either directly or indirectly, by implication or otherwise, entered into any commitment on defence matters with any other country or with any Government or authority whatsoever outside this State.

Will the Taoiseach, in order to clarify the position further, indicate what significance is to be attached to recent reports that British, American and French Army officers have been inspecting defences in the Twenty-Six Counties, while Irish Army officers have been acting similarly in the North of Ireland?

I think that question was answered by the Minister for Defence last week, and I do not think I could find words more comprehensive or categoric to cover the question put by the Deputy.

But these reports have appeared since that answer was given by the Minister.

I would advise the Deputy not to pay too much attention to newspaper reports.

I am merely anxious to put an end to the false propaganda that is being spread.
