Vol. 113 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation for Clones Civilian.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that Mr. Terence Brady, of Clones, sustained grave injuries in going to the assistance of a Garda in Clones on the 29th March, 1948, and in doing so undoubtedly saved the life of the Garda; that as a result of these injuries he was transferred from the County Hospital, Monaghan, to the Richmond Hospital, Dublin, where he was operated on and detained for some weeks and as a result suffered considerable financial loss; and, further, that the paltry sum of £50 has been granted to this man by way of compensation, out of which he has to pay all expenses with the exception of the surgeon's fee, leaving him approximately £15 for his gallantry and suffering; and if the Minister will state whether he proposes to grant adequate compensation to this man so as not to discourage members of the public from going to the assistance of Gardaí.

I am having this case re-examined with a view to increasing the grant made to Mr. Brady.
