Vol. 113 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration to U.S.A.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (i) the number of Irish citizens who emigrated to the United States of America in 1946, 1947, and to the latest date in 1948 for which figures are available; (ii) the actual or estimated number of people at present arranging to emigrate there, and (iii) the permitted quota for each year.

(i) Statistics of the numbers of Irish citizens who emigrated from this country to U.S.A. since 1946 are not available, but the number of persons whose country of last permanent residence was stated to be Ireland and who emigrated by sea to U.S.A. were 168 in 1946, 1,840 in 1947, and 2,451 in the period January-June, 1948; the numbers of non-Irish citizens included in these totals is believed to be very small. Corresponding particulars of emigration by air are not available. (ii) The particulars asked for in the second part of the question are not available in my Department. (iii) The permitted quota for each of the years 1946, 1947 and 1948 was 17,853.
