asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of officers and men who were serving in the Garda Síochána on the 31st March, 1927; 31st March, 1940, and 16th February, 1949.

The following are the figures: 31st March, 1927, 7,193; 31st March, 1940, 7,049; 16th February, 1949, 7,344.

On 31st March, 1940, there were 298 members in the Taca Síochána in addition to the figure I have quoted.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the numerical strength of the Garda Síochána in the Dublin Metropolitant Area on 31st December, 1948, and if he will give the number of (a) assistant commissioners, (b) chief superintendents, (c) superintendents, (d) inspectors, and (e) sergeants serving in the area in question on the same date.

The numerical strength of the Garda Síochána in the Dublin Metropolitan Division on 31st December, 1948, was 1,598. This included one deputy commissioner, one chief superintendent, ten superintendents, 30 inspectors, 58 station sergeants and 164 sergeants. An assistant commissioner was not assigned to the division.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the total numerical strength of the Garda Síochána on 31st December, 1948, and if he will also give the number of (a) sergeants, (b) inspectors, (c) superintendents, and (d) chief superintendents in the force on the same date.

The total numerical strength of the Garda Síochána on 31st December, 1948, was 7,376. This included 1,310 sergeants, 78 inspectors, 135 superintendents and 26 chief superintendents.
