Vol. 114 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Flooding.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that there is flooding in the townlands of Cloonmore Upper and Cloonmore Lower (Ballyfarna, Claremorris, County Mayo); and that his Department refused to sanction a rural improvements scheme for this area; and, if so, whether he will state if it is now possible to allow this scheme to be put through.

An application was received in my office for a grant under the rural improvements scheme towards the cost of a drainage work in the townlands of Cultibo, Cloonmore Upper and Lower, for which Mr. Henry King was spokesman. The inspector who visited the site reported that the work could not be carried out without increasing flooding in the Yellow River into which the stream in question discharges. The Yellow River is itself in a bad condition and its improvement would be entirely outside the scope of a minor drainage scheme. Mr. King was duly informed of the position.
