Vol. 114 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Monaghan Accident.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that Mr. James Casey of Killyneena, County Monaghan, lost his right arm in a flax mill accident in 1937 at the age of 18; that the employer was declared bankrupt following the going into liquidation of his insurance company—the Irish Employers' Mutual Insurance Association—and that, as a result, Mr. Casey has received no compensation except for a period of two to three months following the accident; and if, in the circumstances, he will consider granting him some form of compensation or indicate if it is his intention to make provision in future social service schemes for cases of exceptional hardship such as this.

I am not aware of the case mentioned by the Deputy. I regret that there are no funds at my disposal from which this worker could be granted compensation, but what is stated to have happened in this case will be borne in mind in connection with the framing of any new scheme of workmen's compensation.
