Vol. 114 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Turbary Development.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware (a) that last year the Land Commission divided the O'Donoghue lands in Canborrin, Caherciveen, amongst about 30 tenants in the neighbourhood requiring turbary; (b) that those tenants cut turf there but could not get it out owing to the fact that no development by way of roadmaking or drainage has been done; and (c) that the immediate execution of such work is now a matter of extreme urgency; and, if so, whether he will make the necessary arrangements for putting the development scheme into operation forthwith.

The turbary rights over a portion of the bog in question were allotted some years ago and certain improvement works were carried out. The turbary rights over an area of 184 acres are still on the hands of the Land Commission. Pending the final disposal of these rights, all the accessible bog plots were let last year and in connection with the lettings some road repairs and drainage were done by the Land Commission to facilitate the cutters. No complaint has been received from any tenant. A scheme is now under consideration for the disposal of the turbary rights on hands and for the execution of the additional improvement works necessary.
