Vol. 114 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garden of Remembrance.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state if and when the scheme for a Garden of Remembrance, commemorating Ireland's dead, will proceed, and why there has been a delay in making an announcement on the position.

A request has been received for the temporary use of the space at the Rotunda Gardens for infant welfare purposes. This request has been supported by strong representations from the Minister for Health. Pending a decision on the matter, I am unable to say when the Garden of Remembrance scheme may proceed.

So that is the way the republicans are going to deal with the Garden of Remembrance.

The Garden of Remembrance, according to my file, was first thought of in the year 1935. It took all that time for the last Government to think of the matter.

The war intervened, as the Minister knows. It took that time to get possession of the site and all the other things that had to be done.
