asked the Minister for Finance if he will give in respect of each year since 1925 the amounts expended on the maintenance of existing drainage districts whether by drainage boards, boards of trustees or local authorities.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, to circulate the statement in the Official Report.

The above figures are taken from the Annual Reports furnished to the Commissioners of Public Works by Connty Councils and Joint Drainage Committees. Figures for the years prior to 1933 are not readily available.

The number of districts in the hands of local authorities was 22 in 1925 and increased gradually to 195 prior to the appointed day under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945 (31st March, 1945). Since that date all existing drainage districts (285 in number) are maintainable by local authorities.

There is no information available regarding expenditure by drainage boards or trustees.
