Vol. 114 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition and Division of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission propose to acquire for division the lands of Mrs. Halliday (deceased), Rathbrannagh, County Limerick.

The Land Commission have no proceedings for the acquisition of these lands but the matter is under inquiry.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what representations have been made to him respecting the acquisition and distribution of the Jackson farm at Kilfenora, County Clare; and if, in view of the urgent need that exists in that village for a sufficient supply of milk, he will recommend very early action on the matter.

Proceedings have been instituted by the Land Commission for the resumption of the lands referred to by the Deputy.

Will the Minister endeavour to expedite this matter? I would point out that there is no registered milk vendor in that area and, in consequence, many of the people of the village have to do without milk for ordinary domestic use.

I shall ask the commissioners to speed up the matter.

A change of front.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what representations have been made to him respecting the division of the Sampson estate at Whitegate, County Clare; if he is prepared to recommend a re-examination of the division with a view to securing what would seem to be a more equitable distribution of the property; and if he will also state whether a decision has been reached respecting the provision of a cow park on the lands.

Representations have been received regarding the division of the part of the Sampson estate in the district of Whitegate and I have arranged to have these representations fully investigated. As regards the question of providing a cow park on this estate, I am hoping for an early decision on the matter.

asked the Minister for Lands if representations have been made to him respecting the very large tracts of land let for grazing purposes alone, in North Clare to the extent of over 4,000 acres amongst ten people; if he will recommend that an examination of this position be made by the Land Commission with a view to securing the acquisition and distribution of these lands amongst the uneconomic landholders and landless men surrounding these grazing tracts.

The Land Commission have received representations urging the acquisition of certain lands in North Clare and the matter is receiving attention.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (i) the number of allottees in County Galway allotted holdings under the various Land Acts from 1923 to 1939 who have not worked their holdings to the satisfaction of the Land Commission : (ii) the number under each Act who have not occupied their houses, and (iii) the number of landless men allottees in each case.

The present position is that of the County Galway allotments so far examined 42 are under observation for unsatisfactory user, 19 of these being landless men's allotments, and 13 are under observation for failure to occupy dwelling-houses, nine of these being landless men.

A small percentage of 1,500.

asked the Minister for Lands if he can state the amount of land acquired by the Land Commission during the past year and the net average price per acre paid to the vendors after redeeming annuities.

It would not be possible to give the information required as to price without a great deal of inquiry and examination, which I do not feel justified in asking the Land Commission to undertake.
