Vol. 116 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Supply for Tenants.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that a promise was made by the Land Commission several years ago to their tenants on the Plains of Boyle that water supplies would be made available to them forthwith; and, if so, whether he will recommend to the Land Commission to take steps to implement the promise made to these tenants, in view of the serious hardships inflicted on them owing to shortage of water.

A boring to a depth of 400 feet failed to provide water in this case. A fresh attempt will be made in the coming autumn but it is impossible to forecast with what results because of the elevated and dry nature of this particular locality.

Is the Minister aware that the boring mentioned was carried out at a very high altitude where the prospect of getting water was very remote? In my opinion, one boring is not sufficient. I suggest to the Minister that there should be at least three borings.

So far, one boring has not reached water. If we can succeed in getting water anywhere in the locality I think that one boring will have to do.
