Vol. 116 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clare Railway Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that excursion trains on the West Clare railway on Sunday afternoons are not running this summer and if, in consideration of the great need for such a service, he will take steps to have the matter remedied.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that there is only one train from Ennis to the holiday resorts of West Clare on the West Clare railway, and if, in view of this inadequate service, he will take steps to have the matter remedied.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take questions Nos. 27 and 28 together.

I am informed by Córas Iompair Éireann that they propose to operate a number of Sunday excursion trains on the West Clare railway during July and August, and that their arrangements will shortly be announced.

In addition to the daily train service from Ennis, there are a number of bus services to the various holiday resorts in West Clare. The company inform me that the existing or potential traffic would not warrant them in increasing the train services.

Will the Minister make further inquiries into this matter? Complaints have been made to me that the bus services are not adequate to meet the demands of people travelling in the West Clare area, and the train service is inadequate.

I shall have the Deputy's complaint conveyed to the company.
