Vol. 117 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork County Council Workers.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that a large number of county council workers are now unemployed, in parts of Cork County, as the county engineer is employing contractors to supply broken stones and chips; and, if so, whether he will state what action, if any, he intends to take to safeguard the interests of the county council workers concerned.

Employment returns for last month show that the number of men employed on road work in County Cork is as high as last year. I have made inquiries and am informed that the county council machinery is fully occupied and that it is the usual practice for the council to supplement material produced by direct labour with material purchased from contractors. The matter is one for the county council.

Is the Minister aware that the information supplied to him that machinery of the county council is in use is false? There is no machinery in the county council yards in Mallow at the moment.
