Vol. 117 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relief of Flooding in Cork.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state what provision has been made under the proposed Local Authorities (Works) Act for the relief from flooding of the following towns: Kanturk, Charleville, Mallow and Liscarroll, County Cork.

In reply to the Department's original circular letter of the 10th March last schedules of 118 schemes at an estimated cost of £46,984 were submitted to the Department in respect of North Cork. The location of each work was shown by reference to district electoral divisions. The position in regard to proposals affecting the towns in question will be ascertained as a result of correspondence now in progress and when obtained will be communicated to the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the bulk of the proposals put in by the Cork County Council under the proposed Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, has been discarded as unsuitable and that though the main purpose of the proposed Act is primarily to deal with the cleaning of rivers and alleviation of flooding, all proposals of that nature have been put in abeyance; and, if so, whether he will state what instructions, if any, were sent to the Cork County Council from his Department in regard to the shelving of these proposals.

The Deputy's information regarding this matter is incorrect. No decision has yet been issued by the Department which is awaiting the submission by the Cork County Council of a schedule of the schemes that may be undertaken without delay in the present financial year.
