Vol. 117 No. 7

Supplementary Estimate, 1949-50. - Vote 65—External Affairs.

I move:—

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £53,800 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1950, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Office of the Minister for External Affairs, and of certain Service administered by that Office (No. 16 of 1924), including a Grant-in-Aid.

I want to make it quite clear that is not dividing the Houses on this Estimate we are not in any sense implying approval of the Vote of £25,000 for the news agency, the Bill for which has not yet passed the Dáil. Unfortunately, it is not possible to single that item out of the Vote at this stage for the purpose of having a division upon it, but we are completely opposed to voting the money for that purpose.

I will undertake that the money will not be utilised unless the Bill is passed.

Vote put and agreed to.
