Vol. 118 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Information on Devaluation.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state whether the Government was informed in advance of the decision of the British Government to devalue sterling; and if so, whether the Government will arrange to publish the correspondence that passed between the Governments of Great Britain and Ireland on the subject.

On the morning of the 17th September, 1949, the day preceding that of the announcement of the British Government's decision to devalue the £ sterling, I was handed by the British Representative in Dublin a personal and confidential communication from Mr. Attlee informing me of his Government's decision and of the intention to announce it on the evening of the 18th September. Apart from this communication, no intimation of the British Government's decision was given to the Irish Government, and no correspondence passed between the two Governments in the matter. The question of publication does not, therefore, arise.
