Vol. 118 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Tipperary Forestry Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) why the forestry branch of his Department has not accepted for afforestation purposes approximately 300 acres of land in the Cappawhite-Hollyford locality in County Tipperary which were offered by the owners through the local guild of Muintir na Tíre a considerable time ago; (b) whether the locality was examined by an inspector of his Department for afforestation purposes; and, if so, whether he will indicate the nature of his report; and (c) whether, in view of the fact that there is still evidence that timber grew successfully on these lands comparatively recently, he will favourably consider the question of purchasing them for afforestation.

Save for a small strip of old woodland in the valley, the bulk of the area offered for sale lies above the 1,000 feet contour and is unplantable. If the Deputy could induce the owners to offer for sale the lower plantable slopes, he would be doing a great service to the Department.
