Vol. 118 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Youghal Port.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether in apportioning the amount of money intended for the development of the fishing industry he will consider the claims of the port of Youghal with its tradition as a shipping and fishing centre, bearing in mind that Youghal was at one time one of the best-known ports in Western Europe, with an appreciable direct foreign trade; and whether under the contemplated scheme of development an effort will be made to re-establish and stimulate the trade of the port, particularly in connection with fish curing and marketing.

The development of the fishing industry at Youghal, as at other places, must primarily depend upon the initiative and enterprise of the local fishermen. The advice and assistance of my Department is, of course, always available when required and it is open to fishermen at Youghal who are members of the Sea Fisheries Association to make application for fishing gear and equipment which the association issues to members generally in accordance with its rules.
