Vol. 118 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Rabbits.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that, owing to the low price being paid by the British authorities for rabbits exported from this country, exporters find it uneconomic to continue; and, if so, whether he will make representations to the British authorities with a view to the payment of an increased price at an early date.

The reply to the first part of the question is "No". I am aware, however, that as a result of a reduction last week in the export price for rabbits, the price being paid to trappers by exporters is not now as attractive as it was. The price of rabbits on the British market depends entirely on supply and demand and, as Australian rabbits, of which there are very large supplies are most in demand, the price paid for Irish rabbits has been considerably reduced. The question of price is being kept under close observation and any improvement in price will be passed on to exporters.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is a better price to be obtained in France and could his Department see their way to make inquiries in that direction, with a view to development?

I shall have inquiries made into that suggestion.
