Vol. 118 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Activities of Hawkers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the livelihood of ratepaying traders in the towns and villages of County Dublin is menaced by the activities of hawkers selling inferior goods as genuine articles; and, if so, whether he will consider introducing proposals for legislation to protect the interests of bona fide traders.

I have not previously received any representations on the matter to which the Deputy refers in the first part of the question. I am not aware that a situation exists which would call for the enactment of legislation on the lines suggested.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that hawkers travel to various villages and towns in the county, park outside a shop and sell the same class of goods as are stocked in the shops, and that they can make up for any losses by selling inferior or cast-off articles at prices which will enable them to do so? Is he further aware that traders are expected to sell high quality goods at normal prices, and will he take steps to curb the activities of these hawkers?

As I told the Deputy, I have received no representations, with the exception of two complaints, on this matter and I do not think legislation is warranted.
