Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Newcastle Sanatorium.
During the period covered by the question this hospital did not in fact submit any proposals for new works to the Hospitals Commission. I have, however, had a statement prepared indicating the proposals submitted in each of the four years to the Department, and giving the Deputy the information sought by him under the various heads of his question. With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I will circulate this statement for inclusion in the official record.
The following is the statement:—

NOTE: For the works marked * formal tenders were not invited. The carrying out of these works (apart from cooking and surgical equipment, for which competitive quotations were obtained), was entrusted to a Contractor, who was working in the Sanatorium on a large contract for the erection of two forty-bed ward blocks, which he had secured in open competition. This course was adopted because of (a) the difficulties of having more than one contractor working in a very restricted sphere; cted sphere; (b) the nature of the different small works, most of which were of a piecemeal character; (c) the probability that tenders, if invited, would not be on a competitive basis because a Contr actor was already proceeding with major works at the Sanatorium.
The building and installation works included in the items marked * were entrusted to the Contractor in question at the rates for the same or compara ble work to which he was bound under his contract for the erection of the two forty-bed ward blocks.
†The equipping of these temporary staff homes at a cost of approximately £6,000 may be regarded as a first instalment toward the cost of the permanent staff home to which the equipment will be transferred in due course.
