Vol. 118 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Seed Oats Imports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will state (i) the quantity and price per barrel of seed oats to be imported from Denmark; (ii) the quantity of such imports in respect of which licences have been issued, and (iii) the varieties of Danish seed considered most suitable for Ireland.

(i) The quantity and price of Danish seed oats imports will depend on the extent of the purchases made by individual importers and the prices at which they succeed in making purchases. (ii) Licences for the import of 1,600 tons have been issued since the 1st September, 1949. (iii) Large-scale tests of varieties obtainable from Denmark are not yet completed. On present information, Sun II appears to be the variety most suitable in our circumstances. Licences will be granted for the importation of Danish, Swedish or Dutch seed oats, of suitable varieties, on application from merchants.
