Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor and Cycle Tyres.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether an excise duty is levied on motor tyres and cycle tyres manufactured in this country; and, if so, whether he will state (a) the basis on which the duty is assessed, and (b) the amount of revenue derived from this tax during each of the years 1939 to 1948, and 1949 to date.

An excise duty is levied on motor tyres and motor-cycle tyres manufactured in this country. The duty is charged at the rate of an amount equal to 7½ per cent. of the retail price of the tyre. The duty is not charged on bicycle tyres. The reply to the latter part of the Deputy's question is in the form of a tabular statement which will appear in the Official Report.
