Vol. 119 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Leather.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, with a view to reducing the price of leather, the recent increase in which is attributed to the higher cost of hides imported to supplement the home supply, he will consider making an arrangement with the British authorities whereby Irish cattle hides will be made available at more reasonable prices to meet the requirements of Irish tanners.

The Deputy appears to be under a misapprehension, as no cattle hides are being imported from Great Britain. I am satisfied that no useful purpose would be served by approaching the British authorities with a view to securing the return to this country of hides derived from Irish cattle slaughtered in Britain.
