Vol. 119 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Oats.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether any arrangements have been made for the importation of (1) seed oats and/or (2) feeding milling oats; and, if so, if he will state, in each case, the quantities involved, the price to be paid per barrel and the country of exportation.

Arrangements have been made for the importation of oats for seed, feeding and milling purposes. Licences have been granted for the importation of 9,300 tons of seed oats, of which 5,800 tons are being imported from Britain and 3,500 tons from Sweden, Denmark and Holland. It is expected that a further 5,000 tons seed oats will be released for export from Britain to this country and licences will be granted to importers desiring to import up to that quantity.

The price of seed oats is not officially controlled, and it is a matter for importers to purchase their requirements at the most favourable prices.

Approximately 7,750 tons of feeding and milling oats will be imported, of which approximately 7,500 tons have been purchased in the Argentine and the balance in France. These oats have been purchased at a price which will enable them to be sold by Grain Importers, Limited, at prices ranging from 41/6 to 45/- per barrel.

Up the republic every time!

The relevancy of that interjection is not immediately discernible.
