Vol. 119 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Rehabilitation Project.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the number of applications under the land rehabilitation project in respect of which it can be determined whether the work is to be carried out by his Department or by the applicants themselves.

The determination of whether the land to be dealt with on any given holding is to be rehabilitated by the applicant on grant basis or by the Department on a cash or annuity basis is purely for each applicant to decide for himself, and it is therefore impossible to make any estimate of reasonably probable accuracy in regard to the question asked by the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (1) the number of applications under the land rehabilitation project received from County Monaghan; (2) the number of projects started, and (3) the number completed.

Requisitions for most recent statistics have been sent to the district officer in the county referred to, and the information requested by the Deputy will be assembled with the least possible delay.

I should mention that if requisitions for such statistical material are to be made at frequent intervals, the ordinary work of the project must be seriously retarded. If returns are made available at regular intervals of six months, perhaps Deputies could be spared the trouble of formulating more frequent requests for detailed statistics of this kind.
