Vol. 119 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Quality of Turf.

Mr. A. Byrne

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware of the inferior quality of turf, generally wet or consisting of turf mould, which is being distributed to old age pensioners, widows, and unemployed persons at 6d. or 1/- per cwt., and free to persons on home assistance, and whether he will take steps to have good quality turf distributed in future to these people.

I assume that the Deputy's question refers to the fuel being supplied under the cheap fuel scheme in Dublin. I have gone into this matter personally and I find that the heavy rainfall during February affected some of the fuel. Although special arrangements were made to handpick the turf for distribution, it has been found that some of the clamps had become damp and the turf unsuitable. I am arranging, therefore, that machine-won turf will be supplied.
