Vol. 119 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Flooding.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the serious hardships imposed on the people living near the Shannon between Athlone and Banagher as a result of the constant flooding of their homes and property; and, if so, whether he intends to take steps to relieve their plight in the near future.

I am aware that seasonal flooding of lands adjoining the Shannon occurs between Athlone and Banagher, but no practical scheme for confining the river along this stretch to its summer level can be devised.

Am I to take it that the people living in this area are to suffer on in silence for the rest of their days in view of the Parliamentary Secretary's answer?

I am told that no practical scheme for confining the river along this stretch to its summer level can be devised.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that thousands of pounds' worth of property is damaged yearly in this area, and is he seriously suggesting that his Department has no remedy for this state of affairs?

I would love a suggestion from the Deputy or anyone else who can give me a practical scheme.

I thought that the Deputy accepted the Parliamentary Secretary's assurance last year that it would be relieved.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary prepared to jog along in the footsteps of his predecessors and do nothing?

Definitely not.
